Recently, there has been an increased emphasis on size inclusion within fashion, most often reflected in women’s apparel. However, what about stylish options available to men who need size-inclusive apparel?
Every individual deserves to feel their absolute best regardless of size or gender, yet there appears to be an opening in the market for size-inclusive men’s clothing despite an estimated PS6.6 billion plus-sized market that is projected to experience 7.1% compound annual growth between 2017 and 2022.
We can see this trend online too, with body-positive influencers such as David Fadd and Adam Henry making headlines around the globe with their body positivity messages.
Although many luxury brands appear uncooperative in providing inclusive clothing to all. On the high street, however, some companies are adapting big and tall designer clothing in response to customer demand, with many men turning to online vendors in search of stylish yet fitting apparel.
So what issues do big and tall guys encounter when shopping for a new wardrobe?
Our investigation revealed some interesting findings.
Designer Labels Are Lagging Behind
As is often the case, major fashion houses set trends both on and off the catwalk; consequently, high street and lower-cost brands often look towards them for inspiration.
But during New York Fashion Week in 2020, only one plus-size man walked the runway, signaling to bigger men that the industry is failing them.
Notably, some members of the industry have also spoken out against snobbery; an anonymous executive from a luxury brand revealed there are backward attitudes at some top fashion houses, which will negatively influence fashion in the future.
It’s Time for Men to Speak Up
There have been multiple campaigns designed to ensure women’s clothing is more inclusive, yet few for men, meaning the industry doesn’t face as much pressure to offer more options.
Influencers online have made some attempts at changing this situation; the sooner more men join this movement, the better!
Businesses Are Afraid to Take Steps Forward
Businesses aware that large and tall men shop their stores may still feel intimidated about trying something different or taking the risks involved with starting new lines or investing in stock.
Selection in-store Is Significantly Limited
Although online shopping may be faster and simpler, large and tall men shouldn’t feel left out of experiencing in-store shopping if that is something they wish for.
Current efforts on the high street to embrace men of all sizes remain scarce; We hope that over the course of 2018, this may change; for this to occur, however, pressure from customers must also increase alongside an alteration in attitude from designer brands.
Nowhere Is This Going.
Thank goodness, luxury brands have recognized that men also need inclusive sizing so that they can feel and look their best!
There is a range of shops online with extensive offerings; Dockers is proud to boast one with our Big and Tall range; others, such as Hirmer, Bad Rhino, and Jacamo, also boast exceptional collections available for sale.
No matter their style, every man should be able to find clothes they feel confident wearing.
Men should feel good in themselves and the clothing they choose, including big and tall designer clothing – we hope we have given some suggestions of where these can be found!
No doubt we still have some way to go in making sure every brand produces clothing suitable for everyone, but gradually, there will be an explosion in plus-size men’s fashion – this is only the start!
